Facts About Moles

Moles dig holes and tunnels in the ground. A lot of people do not like moles because they mess up their smooth yard, but moles don't mean to cause any harm. They are just looking for food to eat. Moles love to eat bugs!

Digging through the ground is called burrowing. Do you know any other animals that burrow? Rabbits, gophers, chipmunks, groundhogs, and some owls and some squirrels burrow.

Moles are bigger than a mouse, but smaller than a chihuahua. They are bigger than a hamster, but smaller than a chicken.

Moles cannot see very well. If you were standing in front of a mole, it might not run away. Why? Because it probably could not see you! Although that likely wouldn't happen. Moles do not leave their tunnels unless it is an accident.

Moles do have a good sense of smell to help them find their food.

Moles have sharp claws on their front paws that help them to dig underground. Their claws are like shovels.

Moles have a litter of 2 to 7 babies. After a baby mole is one month old, the mama mole no longer has to take care of it. The baby mole is all grown up and able to take care of itself.

Teaching Tip: Your older child could brainstorm, plan, and create a different Peek-A-Boo craft using a different burrowing animal. How would a rabbit, groundhog, or burrowing owl be created? Below is our bunny, groundhog, opossum, prairie dog, raccoon, and owl. Each were created with a large size popsicle stick, permanent markers, and pencils.
